He joined the army in 1951, at the age of 18, in Fresno, California. Throughout his 28 year career, he was stationed in California, Colorado, Missouri, Hawaii, Texas, Japan, and Germany. He fought in both Korea and Vietnam, being awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Serving in the army brought him great joy and pride. In 1955, he was lucky enough to be stationed in Japan where he met the love of his life, Hatsume Arai. They married in Nagoya, Japan in 1957 and were blessed to be together for over 65 years. He loved his family and was a devoted husband and father, always ensuring they had everything they needed. He retired from the Army in 1978 at Fort Carson, Colorado. He had several jobs following the army, with his final retirement from civil service in 1999 at Peterson Air Force Base.
During his military years, he enjoyed bowling, golf, spending time with his family, and traveling throughout Europe. In his retirement years, he enjoyed going on cruises with family and friends, watching old cowboy and war movies, reminiscing about the army, and winning at Cripple Creek, although losing did not stop him from driving up the mountain.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Hatsume (Sue), daughter Betty, his parents, two older brothers, William and Robert, and his sister Betty. He is survived by his children David and Janet, his older brother Melvin, son-in-law Jon, grandchildren Sophia, Corey, and Lance, and great grandchildren Emerson, Kinsley, and Kyrsten.
Although we are comforted in knowing that he is once again reunited with Hatsume, he will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
He will be cremated and his final resting place will be at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
A graveside service for Charles will be held Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, 10545 Drennan Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80925.
