Cheryl Jean Petersen

February 5, 1955 – October 3, 2026

With heavy hearts and endless love, we announce the passing of Cheryl “Sherry” Jean Petersen, age 71, on October 3, 2026.

A true California girl, Sherry was small in stature but mighty in spirit. She was a woman of incredible strength, determination, and fierce love. During her years in Los Angeles, she worked in the entertainment industry in post-production on numerous films and music videos, including Michael Jackson's iconic Thriller.

In 1976, Sherry married the love of her life, Richard Arthur Petersen Jr., beginning a beautiful marriage that spanned 50 years. In 1986, they moved their family from Los Angeles to Widefield, Colorado, to provide their children with a safer and brighter future.

Sherry's greatest accomplishment was the family she built and the countless lives she touched. Together, Sherry and Richard served as foster parents to more than 30 children from El Paso County, opening their hearts and home to children in need of love, stability, and a safe place to belong. Their compassion extended far beyond their own family, and the impact they made on so many young lives will forever be part of Sherry's legacy.

Sherry is survived by her loving husband, Richard; daughters Carrie Cathey (Brian), Randi Petersen Rimando (Nick), and Rachel Petersen (Trevor Ritch); and grandchildren Richard Petersen III, Charli Grace, Benny, Jett, Von, and Axxel. She was preceded in death by her beloved child, Jerrett.

Sherry shared an especially beautiful bond with her first grandchild, Richard Petersen III, whom she and Richard helped raise. In her final days, that love came full circle as he remained faithfully by her side, helping care for the grandmother who had given him so much.

Sherry leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, strength, and generosity that will live on through generations.

She may have been little, but she was mighty. Her love was immeasurable, her impact unforgettable, and the space she leaves behind can never be filled.
