Gary Eugene Wallis, age 84, passed away on April 18, 2026. Born on March 20, 1942, Gary was a resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He will be remembered with deep respect and enduring gratitude by those who knew and loved him.
Gary’s life reflected steady determination and resilience. His formal schooling ended in the 10th grade, yet when he was promoted to SSGT and later ordered to earn his GED, he met that challenge directly—passing on his first attempt. That accomplishment spoke to a hard-working spirit and a willingness to do what was required, no matter the stage of life.
He served his country with distinction, retiring from the United States Army after 23 years as a SFC. His service was recognized through several military medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal (5th award), and driver’s badge. These honors stand as lasting symbols of his bravery, steadfast commitment, and the sacrifices made across a long military career.
Gary’s family life was expansive and deeply cherished. He was married four times. From his first marriage, he had five children, 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. From his last marriage, he had two children and two grandchildren. Across generations, his presence will be remembered and carried forward in the lives he helped shape.
In his personal time, Gary found enjoyment and meaning in stock cars, woodworking, painting, and traveling—interests that reflected both an adventurous spirit and the satisfaction of building, creating, and exploring. He also valued fellowship and connection through involvement with the German club.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Therese Strom, a great neighbor who stepped up and cared for Gary for many years, going above and beyond what any neighbor would do. Her kindness and constancy brought comfort and support that will not be forgotten.
Gary’s own words offer a simple, fitting reflection of how he approached his years: “I loved the best life that I could.”
