Born Oct 27, 1942 in Vernon, Texas.
Died Sept 25, 2026 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Lupe was the daughter of migrant farmers who, along with thousands of other Tejano and Mexican-Americans, traveled the route from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas to Northwestern Ohio, harvesting seasonal crops. Eventually, her parents landed in Bettsville, Ohio, where she grew up as the second-to-youngest of eight siblings. She was devoted to her studies, graduating valedictorian of her high school class, and going on to attend secretarial school before marrying her husband, Renaldo (Joe) Rendon of Fremont, Ohio in 1963. As a military wife, she traveled the world, and made her home in California, Japan, Georgia, Maryland, Colorado, Germany, and Kansas. After Joe’s retirement from the Army, they settled down in Colorado Springs, where they lived together happily for the last 45 years of her life.
Lupe was the beloved mother of four children: Rita Garst (née Rendon) of Aurora, CO, Joseph Rendon of Fountain, CO; Regina Rendon of Brooklyn, NY; and Gregory Rendon of Colorado Springs, CO. She was also the proud grandmother of five grandchildren: James Rendon; Madison Garst; Alicia Rendon; Phoebe Rendon Nissenbaum; and Morgan Garst. She is remembered and cherished by her surviving children and grandchildren along with her sister, Helen Rodriguez of North Carolina, her brother, Fernando Costilla of Ohio, her sons- and daughter-in-law John Garst, Jonathan Nissenbaum, and Wendy Rendon (née Ort) and countless nieces and nephews.
Her family will remember her as sharply intelligent, wryly funny, unfailingly gentle and almost always sweet. Lupe nurtured the vivacious curiosity of all her children and instilled in them a lifetime love of reading and learning. She kept a meticulously clean, organized, and welcoming home, was famous for her fruit Ambrosia and the dozens of cookies she would bake for the holidays, and was prone to cheerfully exclaiming “bingedy bongedy!” whenever she drove over bumpy roads in the car. She sang all church hymns in a high soprano; she read the daily newspaper from cover to cover, and completed every crossword. She enjoyed Andrea Bocelli, the Bee Gees, and ABBA. She was selfless and always thinking of others, contributing to numerous charities and to those in need. Most of all, Lupe loved her family deeply and abidingly, and she cultivated a life filled with laughter and warmth. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Lupe worked hard and lived a long life, doing all she could to make sure she and her loved ones were comfortable and safe. She will be dearly missed.
A Committal Service will be held at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, 10545 Drennan Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80925, US, on October 8, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
