José Luis Nuñez Jr. was born May 1, 1998, and passed away March 16, 2026, at the age of 27. He will be remembered as a kind-hearted, selfless son, father, and friend whose presence was deeply felt by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at Dove Witt Family Mortuary, on March 26, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A Funeral Service will follow at the same location beginning at 1:30 p.m.
From an early age, José showed a spirit that stood out. He loved to draw from the time he was four years old, and his creativity remained a constant throughout his life. Remarkably, he learned how to whistle before he turned one year old—an early glimpse of the personality and spark that would continue to shine. Though he was in special education, he was an honor student and was loved by his teachers. He also achieved greatly in athletics: he became a world champion in taekwondo as a green belt, and he played baseball on a team that won a championship.
José faced challenges in employment, but he found work he genuinely enjoyed at Subway, where he took pride in what he did and in serving others.
Above all, José loved his family. He was the proud father of two daughters, Hope (age 6) and Heaven (age 5), and a devoted stepfather to his stepson, Hayden (age 3). His love for his children was central to who he was and will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
José’s interests reflected both his creativity and his lively spirit. He loved drawing with pencils, playing video games, and talking “mad smack” to those he was playing with or against—always bringing energy, humor, and intensity to the moment. He also had a deep love for animals and was especially known for rescuing dogs, offering care and safety to those who needed it most.
He will be remembered for loving his family, his children, and animals with his whole heart. José was caring, loud, and proud of being Puerto Rican, even though he was born in the United States. He loved his friends, and his loyalty and warmth will not be forgotten.
The family would like to thank the family that has been present with them, and the friends that keep checking in. They also extend gratitude to the university community for always being there, and to everyone present who has supported them in one way or another. They request that everyone attending the service wear some form of green, José’s favorite color.
