Karen was born to Monica Carter and Robert Sutherland on May 18, 1944 in Germany.
She was one of 5 siblings. Dieter Sutherland (Dorothy), James Sutherland (Faith), Sandra Snider (Richard) and Robert Sutherland. Karen came to the U.S. when she was 4 years old. She became a citizen in 2012, she was very proud of that accomplishment! She had 3 daughters and was married to Donald Nonan. Her daughters, Debra Cox, Laura Oswald (Paige) and Dawn Nonan (Montoya).
At a young age she worked at the Chief theatre in Colorado Springs. Then she worked 25 years for the First National Bank. She then retired after 32 years at the Colorado Springs Utilities Company. Another great accomplishment!
She was a very hard worker!
She always provided for her family. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and kids. When her kids were young the family went weekly to the car races where she raced herself and her husband as well. She also was in a demolition derby which we all enjoyed.
Our family also enjoyed going to dinner and the movies often. She also started traditions going to the Co state fair every year and usually more than once. We rode rides all day, ate tons of junk food. She bought us all the coolest items. To this day. I have taken my kids and started that tradition and we don't ever miss the fair. Then even with the German restaurants we enjoyed as kids and the great cakes she would always get us for out birthdays.
Some of our fondest memories were mom and us going skiing during the season almost every weekend with Sandy Webster and her daughters Holly and Keri. She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. And later in her life she became very fond of Cripple Creek and playing the slots. Which she went almost every weekend. She often took the grandkids to the casinos to eat and spend the night in the hotel for a weekend away. She traveled to other states with her daughter Laura to try her luck at their casinos as well.
Karen enjoyed her 7 grandchildren. Rachel Heintzelman (DeStefano), Katie Grafton, Daniel Grafton, Bo Oswald, Elise Montoya, Herman Montoya and Anna Montoya and her 2 great grandchildren, Dominic DeStefano and Jaxson Heintzelman.
She loved all her kids, grandkids and great grandkids very much.
She was a loving, easy going and hardworking independent woman who lived a great life. And her daughters were taught so many great traits, skills and lessons that will never be forgotten.
She enjoyed time spent with many of her longtime friends/coworkers she knew and worked with. They would often meet up for lunches or going to the casinos to catch up.
She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is gone physically but NEVER forgotten.
We love you.
Our hearts are not the same without Karen.
A celebration of life for Karen will be held Friday, August 26, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Dove-Witt Family Mortuary, 6630 S. US HWY 85/87, Fountain, CO 80817.
