Marcia Jeanette Backstrand, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2019, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born in Moneta, Iowa, October 9, 1924, the fourth of five children.
Marcia graduated from Moneta High School and attended San Jose Bible College in 1943, where she met her husband, Kenneth Backstrand. Their attraction began after tasting Marcia’s delicious biscuits from the dining hall; he had to meet the woman who made them. After their introduction, their first date was dinner at the Santa Cruz Warf on her 18th birthday. Four months later, on Feb 16th 1944 they married. KO and Marcia were happily married for 59 years. They had 6 children: Jeanette, Ken, Wilma, Jim, Danny and Debbie.
Marcia was a homemaker, excellent cook, and devoted preacher’s wife. Her faith was strong and very important in her life. She followed Kenneth, long time minister and evangelist, serving at churches in Ohio, California, and Colorado. Her life of service included teaching Sunday school at Central Christian Church in Colorado Springs, and teaching children at Paradise Christian School in Paradise, California. She was a long-time head cook for Colorado summer camps for youth.
Next to her devotion, family was extremely important in her life. KO and Marcia loved each other dearly and actualized her dream of having a large family.
Those preceding in death were her husband, KO; sons, Danny and Jim; her mother and father, 3 sisters and a brother. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, loving children Jeanette, Ken, Wilma, and Debbie; 7 precious grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren. Marcia was also blessed with the wonderful extended Hinkle and Price families, including numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday, February 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Pikes Peak Christian Church, 4955 Bradley Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Viewing will take place from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will take place the same day at Crystal Valley Cemetery, Manitou Springs.
