She was born in Panama City, Fl. On September 16, 1924 to Joseph Jonas Goodwin and Martha Gertie Cochran. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Agnes Raye Goodwin, Anne Hiers, and Betty Jean McCumbers.
In 1945 she met the love of her life, U.S. Army Air Corps Sgt. Joseph A. Merritt, Jr. whom she married in June. They were married for 70 years until his passing in 2015.
Nellie is survived by son Joseph III (Lorraine); and daughters Martha, Rita (James), and Mildred; grandchildren Carie, Joseph IV (Stacia); Angie, Susan (Ian), John, and Jay (Ruth Ann); 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Nellie was a faithful, dedicated, loving wife and mother. She kept her USAF family together and served the Lord Jesus Christ whether in the states or overseas, even during her husband’s often military deployments.
She served in many different churches as a Sunday School teacher and Prayer warrior – her “labour of love”. She will be forever missed and will always remain in our hearts.
“Her children rise up and call her blessed;…” Prov. 31:28.
