Norma Jean Nelson

November 14, 1928- August 24, 2020

Jean Nelson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on August 24, 2020 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born in Morrill, Kansas November 14, 1928. She is the third of four children, born to the late Edward Frederick and Edna Mary Frey.

Jean graduated from Crowley High school in 1946 and held a variety of jobs throughout her life prior to working for Widefield School District #3. She retired in 1991 where she spent over 21 years as a school secretary, working mainly at Venetucci Elementary (formally South Elementary) and French Elementary School.

Jean loved being involved and took advantage of every opportunity to be with friends and family. She enjoyed playing in the Valley Girls golf league, played in a variety of Bridge clubs, played Pinochle as often as she could, and loved spending time in her yard with her flowers. Above all, she treasured spending time with her dear family. To know Jean is to know her children, as she was very connected in their lives and her daughters were her best friends.

She had a way about her that made everyone feel special and in fact, all of her grandchildren believe individually that they are her favorite and to this day they argue over this bragging right. Jean was a friend to everyone she met and her radiant smile and contagious laugh made everyone around her feel at home. We are all better people for having had the opportunity to know her generous nature and loving spirit.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her devoted husband Stan; loving children Gifford (Elizabeth) Justice; Jimmie (Charlene) Nelson; Robin Nelson and Kimberly (Mark) Davis; sister Maxine Hanson, 10 adoring grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughter Deborah Costa (1955-2019) brother Robert Frey and her sister Rita Spence.

Please join the family for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church 1201 Leta Drive, Security, Colorado 80911.

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Pikes Peak Hospice Unit at Penrose Hospital 2550 Tenderfoot Hill St, Colorado Springs, CO 80906 in her name.

Beautiful Jean was an efficient and intelligent woman with a marvelous sense of humor. I loved her laugh as well. She made every student at French seem like they were her favorite and they all were. She took a special liking to my son when he was mischievously got soaked from splashing in the water from the down spot. He never was made to feel that he had behaved wrongly. I’m sure she thought it was funny.

Mrs Nelson always treated me special and with Kindness,, Coach Nelson would sometimes throw me the keys to his Volkswagen Bus in Driver Ed Class to go get her flowers or gifts. As a young man they made an impression on me of what Love is, Always together , my 3 yrs in Widefield Wrestling I remember her at most every match, 40 years later I got to see them both at State Wrestling watching with pride their Grandson. They still impressed me with that Love for each other. I am BLESSED with fond memories of her. May she Rest in Peace in JESUS arms. My Condolences to her precious Family

What a kind, caring person Jean was. I had the privilege to know her as a coworker at South Elementary and as the mother of my son, Joey's babysitters Kim and Robin. I was always so blessed by the love this lady's care and concern was shown towards my son and me. Her authentic personality was constantly displayed in the girls Kim and Robin as they consistantly gave from her place of kindness. Generous heart and always smiling, her love was always evident on her face and in her actions. She was a terrific friend during a difficult time in my early days of having a developmentally disabled child. The whole family was always so generous and helped me so much. I was and I am truly grateful that Jean was in my life at this time. She was my angel.

My dear friend Jean or - cute little bunny 😉. We first met more than 50 years ago at our house in Lamar after a high school wrestling match. Our paths would intertwine for the next 5 decades. Your laugh was infectious. Oh what fun we had as two couples. I remember the time we were in Denver for the weekend. That was the last time we let Nels choose the hotel😳. Taking our families together (remember this Robin and Kim?) to the forrest to chop the perfect Christmas tree caused Jean and I to sing “oh thank heaven for seven eleven “The four of us shared many movie and dinner nights. The past couple of years it has been just lunch and conversations. The stories we recalled each time got better and better. The last time we talked we promised to get together soon. That will happen Jean if only in my conversations with Don on Friday night cocktail time. I miss you and we WILL get together one day. Love you lots. Big hugs Stan to you and the whole family. May the good memories rise to the top💗
