

Phyllis Marie Benfield, 73, of Colorado Springs passed away at home on March 27, 2022 after many years of health issues. She was born January 26, 1949 in Rochester, Minnesota to Durward “Dubbs” and Alice “Ally” (Prince) Naese, She was a Navy brat and grew up all over the country, eventually settling in the Kankakee, Illinois area, where she graduated from Clifton Central High School in 1967. She married Joseph Benfield on April 16, 1970 and threw herself wholeheartedly into her role as Army wife and mother to four children. After stations in Florida, Texas, Georgia, and Germany, they were stationed to Fort Carson in 1983 and settled in the Widefield area. After Joe’s retirement in 1988 they chose to remain in the area. Phyllis worked for Widefield School District #3 for many years, retiring in 2009.
Phyllis was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and loved baseball in all forms. She also enjoyed cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gerald Naese and granddaughter Heather Nicole Benfield. She is survived by her husband Joe, son Bob (Donna) Benfield of Freeland, Washington; daughter Christine Benfield of Fountain; daughter Annette (Greg) Lauer of Colorado Springs; daughter Missy (George) Reeves of Paola, Kansas; grandchildren Megan Benfield, Amber (Alex) Hermann, Kelsey Benfield (Blake Franzen), Greg (Savannah) Lauer, Jr., Wendy (Michael) Main, Bryant Hake, Marcus (Kira Meyers) Hake, Miriam Lauer, Cate Hake (Matt Phillips), and Nick Reeves; and great-grandchildren Demitri Lauer, Oliver Lauer, Kvothe Main and Harper Hake.
Arrangements are being handled by Dove-Witt Funeral Home. There will be a private family ceremony at Pikes Peak National Cemetery at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, March 31 at Restoration Church in Fountain from 2:00-5:30 pm.
