Shirley grew up in Salina, Kansas, where she graduated from Salina High School in 1949. Shirley met Luther Lee Allen during her high school years. He would accompany her brother, Bradley, for Sunday dinners at the house. They also both worked at Montgomery Wards prior to her graduating high school, and later were married on July 26, 1951, in Salina, Kansas.
Shirley lived in Colorado Springs for 65 years and shared those years with her loving husband, Luke, whom she was married to for 57 years. After raising their children, she went to work at Schlage Lock Company at the age of 51, and dedicated 20 years of service, where she retired. She loved spending time with her family. Throughout her life she had a passion for cooking, dancing in her younger years, bowling, painting, fishing, and gardening.
Shirley was an exceptional woman, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was so full of life, gentle, compassionate, and had a smile and a laugh that was contagious. Shirley’s legacy of love and devotion will continue to inspire all those who ever had the good fortune to know her. Those who met her immediately knew what a kind and genuine person she was and the positive mark she left on anyone she met.
