

Shirley Lucille Cowles, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away unexpectedly October 24. She was born February 15, 1934 in Hollywood, California. She grew up in Elk Point, South Dakota, and received her teaching certification from the University of South Dakota. She married the love of her life, a young man from Vermillion, David R. Cowles. They were married for 49 years. Together they entered the Army, where she served as an officer’s wife for 22 years. She made lifelong friends as an Avon representative for 35 years, and while collecting dolls, Fenton, and as a member of Red Hat and CHABA’s. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She was preceded in death by husband, her parents, Homer and Lucille Ericson, and her brother John. She is survived by her brother Richard Ericson (Ina); daughters Kim Schoenfelder (Bernie) and Shelly Laborde (Mark); sons Mark Cowles (Julie), and Davey Cowles; eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. She deeply touched the lives of everyone she knew, and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Goodwill Industries.
