Susie Hook-McFann, age 89, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2022. Susie was born February 26, 1933.
Susie Hook-McFann peacefully made her transition to heaven to join her beloved husband, Carl Eugene Hook; her beloved husband and companion, Ralph McFann; her daughter, Sandra Refior; her grandson, Kyle Murt; her granddaughter, Kirsten Hook; her mother, Dorothy Hickman; her brother, Richard Staley; her sister, Evelyn Maze; and her sister, Marie Smith.
Susie grew up in Sidney, Ohio, and graduated from Houston High School in 1951. She married the love of her life, Carl Eugene Hook, on April 26, 1952, and bore four children, Linda Sue Murt, Debra Rich, Sandra Refior, and Carl Hook, Jr. Sandra Refior passed away on September 2, 2020. Her legacy also includes her beloved grandchildren: Brendan Murt, Kyle Murt (deceased July 1, 2020), Jodi Nicholls Fannin, Dennis Bernabei, Eric Refior, Duane Refior, Angel Gonzalez, Ryan Hook, Corey Hook, Kylie Hook, Tyler Hook, Nuntawat Cherngtakong aka Cab (by marriage) and Kirsten Hook (deceased October 24, 1991); her beloved great grandchildren: Liam Murt, Aiden Giles (by marriage), Nathan Nicholls, Sage Refior, Tristyn Refior, and Draeven Refior; and her beloved great great granddaughter, Zya Nicholls. Susie welcomed the in-laws and stepchildren into our family and treated them as her own: Michael Murt, former son-in-law; Sakorn (Pun) Hook, daughter-in-law; Rich Gonzalez, son-in-law, Jennifer Murt (wife to grandson, Brendan), and Shawna (wife to grandson, Ryan), Michael McFann (stepson), Jean Dikeman (stepdaughter), and Daniel McFann (stepson). She is also survived by her beloved sister, Edith Leist, and her beloved brother, George Staley, and many other family relatives and friends.
Carl and Susie Hook were married for 48 years until his parting on June 8, 2000. Carl was in the U.S. Air Force and served from 1948 to 1973. He retired as a Master Sergeant. Susie traveled with him to England, Ohio, Mississippi, California, Italy, and Colorado. She was a very proud, devoted military wife, and she loved Carl deeply. When Carl had back surgery in 1973, Susie didn’t know if he would be able to work again, so she decided to work as a cashier at Fill-Em-Fast and then went on to be a manager at Diamond Shamrock. She was well respected by her employees and would win manager of the year every year. She would take her bonus check and split it with her employees, saying, “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have won.” Susie had a lot of integrity and was loved by those fortunate enough to know her. After Carl’s passing, Susie spent time grieving with Carl’s best friend, Ralph McFann, better known as “Mac.” A year after Carl passed, Mac and Susie “RUNNOFT” to Las Vegas to be married, and Mac became her companion until 2019 when he passed at the age of 92. If you saw the movie, O’Brother Where Art Thou, you’ll understand what Susie meant about running off (RUNNOFT).
In an English assignment written in 1979, Carl wrote about his wife, Susie, and said the following: “To choose any one person who had the most influence in my life is very easy. It would, in all sincerity, be the lovely, adorable lady who has shared the last twenty-seven years of my life by my side. She has never given up on me even though I have given her cause.” Carl went on to say, “She is always patient with me. She is always warm hearted; she is sweet; she is lovely. She is my friend, my lover; she is a Mother, faithful, honest, but most of all, she is “My Wife.”
Susie Hook-McFann personified what it was like to be a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. She gave endlessly of herself, and all her family will be forever grateful. Her family will always remember the wonderful holidays and her incredible cooking. No one around can make better tacos, meatloaf, potato salad, or goulash. Corey couldn’t wait to get to Colorado to eat his grandmother’s mashed potatoes. He barely saved enough for the rest of the family to eat. There will be huge holes in the lives of her loved ones.
Susie was a classy woman and the matriarch of the family who held the family together. She was compassionate, kind, loving, intelligent witty, strong, and fiercely protective of her family. She was a devoted Colorado Rockies fan and would schedule events around the games so she wouldn’t miss them. Susie was overjoyed and ecstatic when her grandson, Corey, called her and allowed her to talk with Rockies player LF Connor Joe after a game at Washington National Park.
Even though she endured so much pain the last few years of her life, Susie never complained. She was unique, old school, had high morals and was full of grace. She will be missed immensely. Rest in peace sweet Susie Hook-McFann. You’ve earned it!!!! You are so loved. You will live on in our beautiful, wonderful memories.
