Barbara was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 23, 1936. Mike and Barbara were married on September 28, 1958 after meeting each other while both attending Wagner College on Staten Island, New York, where she received her bachelor’s degree in nursing.
As a child, most of Barbara’s activities revolved around her family, church, baseball, and Girl Scouts. Scouting was important to her and due to her outstanding leadership, she represented the United States in France where she was selected to give a speech, in French, to a large audience of Girl Scouts from around the world. Barbara was a devoted fan of the “Brooklyn” Dodgers and attended both their games and the minor league baseball games regularly. Later in life, she became a Washington Nationals fan.
Barbara chose to give up her career as a registered nurse to devote herself to her family becoming a very active wife to a Naval officer and an amazing mother to her three children. She was active in helping younger military wives and enjoyed her life with Mike as they navigated traveling with his career in the Navy. Barbara also poured herself into her children and any other children who were in need of help. She was their Girl Scout leader, room mother, PTA member, sports fan, theater mom, chauffeur, and offered an open house to anyone who needed a mom. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with a passion and continued to serve them as she did her own family. Barbara also was an amazing crocheter, crafter, avid Jeopardy watcher, and Redskins fan.
Barbara brought joy to all around her right up to the end with her humor. She had nurses laughing in hospitals and in hospice care. With a great love of all kinds of music, she requested her family sing to her many of her favorite hymns, Broadway songs, and folk music right up until her last days before going home to be with her Savior.
