Bernie was born July 6, 1935 in Uniontown, PA.
Bernie is survived by her son, George Martin, Jr, and (Tania) from Bristow, Virginia; and her daughter, April Beckner and (Kenny) from Fredericksburg, Virginia; eight grandchildren: Samantha, Chelsea, Joshua, Casey, Michael, Trey, Dani, and Georgie. Eight great-grandchildren: Kayla, Shane, Jackson, Mason, Evan, Layla, Avery, and Zoe, two nieces: Crystal Shamrock from Lemont Furnace, PA, and Brenda Sabatini from Uniontown, PA., and her beloved dog Sweetie Anne.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, George F. Martin Sr.; her father, Aca A. Thomas; her mother, Sidna L. Frazee Thomas of Uniontown, PA; her brother, Clayton A. Thomas of Uniontown, PA; her sister, Ferne E. Petrucci of Uniontown, PA, and her nephew, Ronald Metheny of Alexandria, VA.
After graduating high school, Bernie worked as a secretary at a local insurance company. Bernie stayed in that field through many companies and states as a military spouse, following her husband to duty stations across the United States. When her husband retired, they settled down in Manassas, VA. She worked on the Hill for a while as Senator Ted Stevens’s correspondence secretary until the commute to DC was too much; she found a local attorney in Manassas and worked as his legal secretary until she thought she wanted to retire. The retirement didn’t last long, she did some part-time work as a word processor at IBM Manassas, did some bus cleaning at night, and her last job was driving a school bus for Minnieland Corporation. She finally retired in 2003 at 70 years old.
Bernie was a proud nanny and loved to shop, not only for her wardrobe; she loved shopping for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, which took her out of the house for hours a day, even in the later years when she had trouble getting around, looking for what she thought they would love to have. She also loved Christmas; it was her favorite holiday that she looked forward to each year.
Services will be private as we take mom back for one last visit to her favorite place, The Nubble Lighthouse, York Beach, ME.
