Obituary of Bernard Carroll Dowling
In Loving Memory of Bernard Carroll Dowling June 30, 1938 – January 7, 2024 We are deeply saddened to announce that Bernard Carroll Dowling, age 85, of Fredericksburg, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 7th, 2024, at Falls Run Nursing & Rehabilitation. Born in the heart of Manhattan, NY, Bernard was the cherished son of the late Bernard C. and Eileen (Enright) Dowling. His early years in the bustling city instilled in him a sense of resilience and adventure which he carried throughout his life. Bernard's dedication to his country was evident through his honorable service in the United States Army from 1963 to 1967. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career with the Department of State, becoming a revered Senior Executive. His commendable 44 years of public service were marked by integrity, diligence, and a deep commitment to his nation. Left to honor Bernard's legacy are his wife, Katherine F. Dowling; his children, whom he adored: Brian C. Dowling of Dumfries, VA, Sean M. Dowling of Virginia Beach, VA, Michael J. Dowling (Jessica) of Fredericksburg, VA, Brendan P. Dowling of Santa Barbara, CA, Katherine M. Allen (Michael) of Dumfries, VA, and Suzanne M. Dowling of Fredericksburg, VA. He was a guiding force in the lives of his siblings, Brendan Dowling (Maureen) of Pearl River, NY, and Maureen Eanniello (Andrew) of Pearl River, NY. Bernard's legacy will continue to flourish through his nine grandchildren: Brendan K. Means, Paul M. Means, Katherine A. Allen, Anna M. Allen, Christopher M. Allen, Ashlynn P. Dowling, Reagen M. Dowling, Beau P. Dowling, and Colin P. Dowling, who will miss their grandfather's wisdom, humor, and the stories of his many adventures. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Bernard's honor at 10:30 am on Friday, January 19, 2024, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1009 Stafford Avenue, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. He will be laid to rest at 12:30pm at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA. A reception will follow the burial from 1:30-3:30pm at the VFW Post #1503 Dale City, 14631 Minnieville Road, Montclair, VA 22193.
