

Born on July 19, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bernie lived a life marked by devotion, service, and love. He graduated from Etna High School in 1964, the same year he proudly joined the United States Marine Corps, beginning a long and distinguished military career that spanned more than two decades.
In 1966, Bernie married the loved of his life, Sylvia C. Scandrol, and together they shared 59 wonderful years filled with adventure, laughter, and unwavering companionship. Bernie earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1972 and continued to serve his country until his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1988.
After retirement, Bernie and Sylvia enjoyed traveling the world together, exploring new places, and creating countless memories with family and friends. He will be remember for his steadfast integrity, quick wit, and the deep love he had for his family.
Bernie was preceded in death by his father, Joseph F. Pitchke; his mother, Audrey M. Pitchke; and his brothers, Thomas J. Pitchke and Kenneth J. Pitchke.
He is survived by he beloved wife, Sylvia D. Scandrol Pitchke; daughter Sylvia Walker and her husband David; sons Paul Pitchke and his wife Heather, and Sean Pitchke and his wife Cindy. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren- Ashley Walker, Melissa Walker, David Walker, Kristen Pitchke, Chelsea Hines, Taylor Adams, Matthew Pitchke, and Cayden Pitchke - and two great-grandchildren, Dawson Walker and Jason Ward.
Bernie is also survived by his sisters Audrey Lott (husband Jim), Shirley Leasure (husband Larry), Patty Perkins (husband Ron), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.
A service celebrating Bernie's life will be held at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, located at 1621 Emancipation Hwy, Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 5, 2025, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. A Reception will follow at the same location from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Burial with Military Honors will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico, located at 18424 Joplin Road, Virginia, on December 5, 2025, at 2:30 pm.
Bernie Pitchke will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his country, his deep love for his family, and the kindness and laughter he brought to everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
