Betty Lou Hanna-Hess

She is survived by two sons, Mark Hanna and wife Andrea Orr of Ashburn, VA and Bradley Hanna and wife Deborah, of King George, VA.; five grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Daniel Torres, Erin Hanna, Jessica and husband Terry Brewer, Sean Blake Hanna and wife Jamie, and David Hanna and wife Kristin; and three great grandchildren, Micheal and Kyleigh Bewer and Kam Hanna. Also surviving are God-daughter Jayme-Lee Mauro of Littleton, MA, former daughter-in-law, Karyn Hanna, and Jessica Medghalchi mother of Kam Hanna both of Frederick, MD.

Betty was born in 1933 in Russellville Arkansas to Lester and Tracey Colburn. She was raised in a dairy farm family and graduated from Russellville High School in 1951. She married John Hanna in 1951 and following his enlistment in the US Navy, they started a family and lived in Corpus Cristi TX, San Francisco CA, Memphis TN, Fayetteville AR, Columbus OH, St. Louis MO, Upper Marlboro MD, Arlington VA, King George VA, and Winchester VA.

Betty retired from the US Census Bureau after 28 years of service.

She was a loving grandmother and great grandmother and relished in grandchildren sleepovers and visits to the local ice cream parlor.

After John died in February of 2010, Betty married Charlie Hess in 2012 who became a late life partner to Betty and a doting step great grandfather. Charlie died in 2019.

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winchester and was a regular member of the choir and later the Senior Singers.

Interment will be at a later date in Mt Hebron Cemetery, 305 E Boscawen St, Winchester, VA 22601, with her first husband, John Eldon Hanna Jr.
