Born on September 21st, 1932, in Stafford, Virginia, Jean was the daughter of Alexander Harrison Raines and Janie Louise Raines. She graduated from Stafford High School, where she was actively involved in many aspects of student life. During her school years, she was a member of the Newspaper Club, Glee Club, Home Economics Club, and Beta Club. She also served as a homeroom representative, helped with the yearbook, and played on the basketball team.
On February 28th, 1952, Jean married the love of her life, James Stanley Shackelford Sr. Together, they built a life filled with love and raised three wonderful children: Belinda, Melody, and Stanley.
Jean built a career marked by dedication, patience, and compassion for her community. She began her working life in the government before becoming a beloved paraprofessional with Stafford County Public Schools. She had a special passion for working with children with learning disabilities and took great pride in helping them thrive. Her patience, intelligence, and selfless dedication made a lasting impression on the students, families, and colleagues whose lives she touched throughout her years of service.
Jean was a beloved member of Rock Hill Baptist Church, where she frequently attended afternoon bingo. She was known as a kind person to all she met and was lovingly known for calling people “honey” or “sweetie.” Those simple words reflected the warmth she extended so naturally to others. She was also admired for her patience, sharp mind, and gentle spirit.
Above all, family was of utmost importance to Jean.
She is survived by her daughters, Belinda Jean Gormley (Craig Gormley) and Melody Jay Denson (Barry Denson); her son, James Stanley Shackelford Jr.; her granddaughters, Jessica Mary Denson, Emily Elizabeth Denson (and fiancé Samuel McGehee), and Kelsey L. Hall; and her grandsons, Grant William Gormley, James Russell Shackelford, and Ethan Joseph Shackelford.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Stanley Shackelford Sr.; her parents, Alexander Harrison Raines and Janie Louise Raines; and her sisters, Louise Dahlgren and June Raines.
Emma Jean Raines Shackelford will be remembered with love and respect for the life she lived, the work she devoted herself to, and the kindness she shared so freely. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, patience, and love that will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories of her warmth and her gentle nature she shared with so many, will bring smiles to the faces of those who loved her. Her life was a blessing, and her memory will remain a treasured part of her family and community for generations to come.
