

Born on August 29, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, Fred was the son of Gladys and Adolf Haven. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Marilyn, who was born in January 1934.
Fred, affectionately known as "Bubby," received his nickname from his sister, who had difficulty saying "brother." After Gladys divorced Adolph, she married John A. Pannell in October 1939. The family grew with the birth of Steven A. Pannell in 1941. They resided in Morgan Park, a small community on Chicago's Southside.
Bubby attended John D. Shoop Elementary and Morgan Park High School. After a brief period at the University of Illinois at Urbana, he transferred to Chicago Teachers College, later renamed Chicago State University. It was there he met his future wife, Crystal W. Ervin. They married in September 1958 after graduation and both secured teaching positions in the Chicago Public School system. Where Fred was an award winning science teacher.
In July 1961, their son Brian was born, followed by their daughter Tanya in May 1964. In August 1968, the family moved to a house in Calumet Heights, a neighborhood on the Southeast side of Chicago.
In 1998, Bubby and Crystal retired from teaching and moved to Port Royal, Virginia. They had been frequent visitors to Port Royal and fell in love with the community. They were able to secure a piece of land and build their forever home.
Bubby is survived by his wife Crystal; children: Brian and his spouse Sarah Liebman, Tanya and her spouse Vicki Sandeen; grandchildren: Charlotte and Markus; and nieces and nephews: Suzanne Lyles, Kimberly Washington, Stephanie Jones Peeks, Guy Washington and Stevie Pannell.
