James Everett Grider Jr. known to all as Jim, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024, at the age of 90. Born in Ames, Iowa, Jim grew up in Westfield, Indiana. He demonstrated a strong sense of duty and commitment from a young age, which guided him through a distinguished career and a dedicated family life.
After graduating from high school, Jim briefly attended Butler University before joining the United States Navy. His naval career was marked by dedication and excellence as he rose to the rank of Senior Chief, retiring after 22 years of honorable service. Following his military career, Jim pursued higher education at Old Dominion University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Finance and a Master's degree in Business Administration. In his second career Jim worked for over 20 years as a district manager and later as an area supervisor for what is now the Senior Community Service Employment Program, a branch of AARP.
Jim was a devoted family man, deeply committed to his wife, Carol, with whom he shared 60 loving years of marriage. Carol preceded him in death in 2023. Jim is survived by his two sons, Tom, who resides in Hickory, NC with his wife, Margaret, and Andy, who lives in Stafford, VA with his wife, Deanna, and their two children, Ashley and Jack.
In accordance with his wishes, Jim's remains will be interred alongside Carol's at Oak Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, VA.
Jim will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his strength of character, and his love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
