

He was born on February 21,1939, in Rowe, Virginia, the son of Terry Short and Lona Short (Street). He was a military veteran, having served three years in the U.S. Navy and then four years in the U.S. Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, he entered his career of computer programming. He worked for many government, non-profit, and for-profit organizations, including the U.S. Senate, U.S. General Services Administration, Department of Commerce, and Daughters of the American Revolution. He came out of retirement to help make government computer systems Y2K compliant. He had a passion for singing, playing music, and spreading the Gospel of Christ. He was known for teaching others to play musical instruments and was always ready for a gospel jam session.
He is preceded in death by his father, Terry Short and his mother, Lona Short.
He is survived by his wife, Benilda Short, and his children, Tina Heiby, Tammy Patera, John Short, and Amanda Short.
The family will have a visitation on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., with a service to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service in Stafford, 186 Shelton Shop Road, Stafford, VA 22554. Burial will take place at National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico after the service at 1:30 p.m., 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, VA 22172.
