I had the pleasure of knowing John over the year. When I first started working with the low income taxpayer community, he was patient and  passionate,  and took the time to really help me understand. His kindness and decency shone through in every interaction.  May his memory be a blessing.

Sending my deepest condolences to John's family. I worked with him for many years and was always awed by his deep expertise and commitment to making sure struggling families could access the supports they needed.  More than that, he was an extremely kind, patient, lovely human being. He'll be missed.

John’s passing was shocking news. He touched so many of us in the free tax preparation and financial resilience fields. It was a true honor to collaborate with John and learn from him over the years. His level of knowledge about the EITC and CTC is unmatched. And more importantly his willingness to educate as advocates in the field as possible to fight for tax credits for children and families was unwavering. John served as an ambassador for children and families and was a great mentor and friend! John you will forever be loved by us all!

Deepest condolences to John's family. John was one of the first people I met when I started my career in tax.  He was always a pleasure to work with, and a steadfast voice on tax policy. He will be missed.

I am so saddened to learn this news of John's passing. All of my early NLC days were full of learning directly from John and soaking in all he had to share about the EITC. I am a better person to have known him and appreciate his deep passion for data and good policy. As Arkansas still does not have a state EITC, I will forever think of John as we fight on! My prayers and love to his friends and family near and far.

It was an honor and a privilege to work with John. His expertise was matched only by his kindness and generosity of spirit. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to John’s family.

I am very sorry to learn of John's passing.  I worked with John for five years in the late 1970s at the Connecticut Citizen Action Group (CCAG).  John was one the key CCAG staff people helping build an organization to empower consumers to get justice from corporations.  He was dedicated to creating a community and statewide organization strongly committed to speaking truth to power every single day.  John help establish CCAG as a leading organizing and activist organization in the state, often in the front lines of standing up for working people.  John was a pleasure to work with - a warm and generous soul, whom I enjoyed bantering with every day.  I was glad, but not surprised, to see he brought the same commitment to justice to his work throughout this life.  He will be missed.

I am so sorry to get this news.  John was a great colleague and friend.  I worked with him in North Carolina at Carolina Community Project back in the 1980's and we had been in touch recently around the death of one of our former colleagues in Charlotte, NC.  His whole life was lived in service to others. He will be missed.

John was a stalwart friend who kept an unwavering eye on the pursuit of justice, particularly for those who had few opportunities to secure the basic necessities of life. Serious but full of humor, he could carry on a pun competition around a dinner table for hours and always win. He loved barbecue and relished his move from New England back south as a time to explore country roads to find the truly good stuff. He loved to run, hike the mountains and woods, and knew how to throw a softball.  He led a truly good life and it was always an honor to share the path with him.

Loved that man.  Brilliant and humble. He was a mentor to me at CT Citizen Action Group.

John was a wise and thoughtful friend & man and brought his intellect and knowledge to the important policy work he did with the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities.  There are dozens of colleagues from local organizations from around the country who benefited from his wisdom and counsel.  His dry sense of humor, and an occasional chuckle, always reminded me of the heart behind his professionalism and thought partnership.  As I head to Spring Training in Arizona this year, I'll plan on thinking of John when the first pitch is thrown.

My sincere condolences to all who loved John.  I knew him through his work with the CBPP and found him to be a very intelligent, dedicated person.  His work had a positive impact on many.  I am deeply sorry to learn of his passing.

I remember summer visits and touring D.C. with John and our family.  Many fond memories of the game room and the stories told.  I will miss him greatly.

John Joseph Wancheck was born in Washington, D.C. on September 17, 1947, to his parents, Joseph Nicholas Wancheck and Norma Hil Wancheck, who preceded in death.  John grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. Since 1994, he has resided in Stafford, Virginia. During this time, he worked for the nonprofit, Center for Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington, D.C. where he served as a senior advisor.  He retired on December 29, 2023.

He is survived by his sole surviving aunt, Dorothy Wancheck, in Washington, Pennsylvania plus many first cousins.

We have finalized the plans for John Joseph Wancheck.  There will be a visitation for John at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 7 – 9 PM.  The funeral home is located at 1621 Emancipation Blvd, Fredericksburg, Virginia. 22401
There will be brief graveside service at the Oak Hill Cemetery on Friday, February 9, 2024.  The cemetery is located at 1902 Plank Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be preferred to some of John’s favorite charities - Feeding America or Stafford Fire Department or Virginia Organizing in John’s name.
John really enjoyed the work at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities over the last several decades.  All will duly miss him.
