Lawrence Tucker, a lifelong reader, history enthusiast, and quietly influential figure, passed away on June 13, 2025 at the age of 78.
Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1946 to Lawrence and Theresa Tucker, he attended Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Thomas More High School & Howard University, where he fostered his love of Black history.
You could always find Lawrence reading a newspaper. His love for journalism led him to become editor of his high school paper and can be seen in his work at the Washington Star, as well as WHMM and WHUR. Later, he began a respected tenure as a doorman at the Watergate, where his quiet grace left a lasting impression. He was known for his discipline and strong work ethic even as a young man on the Tommy More track team. He will be remembered for his thoughtful guidance, which even inspired his sister's decision to become a NICU nurse.
Music filled his life, especially jazz and R&B. He had a refined ear, and the breadth of his taste was unparalleled.
Lawrence lived with quiet purpose, deep integrity, and a constant drive to learn, guide, and uplift. He will be deeply missed and remembered in every well-folded newspaper, every piece of music shared, and every small moment of quiet, lasting influence.
Lawrence is survived by two children: Laura E. Tucker and Lawrence E. Tucker; two sisters: Karen Tucker Cofer and husband Jonathan H. Cofer; and Debra Tucker Smith; one grandson: Jovan Longs-Tucker; aunt: Florence Rooker; nephews: Jonathan H. Cofer II and wife Christina, Jacob M. Cofer and wife Channelle, Jon E. Smith and wife Fulgentia, Jarrett V. Smith, and Jason P. Smith; and numerous cousins and extended family.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service in Fredericksburg, with Father James V. Johnson officiating. Inurnment will be in Springfield, PA at a later date.
