Lois Elizabeth Lowrance passed away peacefully at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA, on February 7th at 12:25am, with her 2 children close at hand and by her side. She is survived by her son, Charles Conley "Chuck" Lowrance, Jr. (and wife, Karen) of Virginia Beach, and daughter, Deena Lynn Lowrance-West, of Fredericksburg. Lois leaves behind 5 grandchildren, 4 grandsons (and their wives), Nicholas Warren "Nick" West (Dorothy), Christopher Conley "Chris" West (Andrea), Parker Wayne West (Charissa), Charles "Conley" Lowrance Ill (Carolyn), and granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Lowrance (fiancé Jake). Lois's 3 oldest grandchildren (the West Boys), have blessed her with 8 great-grandchildren, 7 boys and 1 girl. Lois was pre-deceased by her late husband, Charles Conley "Charlie" Lowrance, Sr. (passed in 1969), who served on the Norfolk Police Force, where earned the promotion to Detective in the Homicide Bureau. Lois is also survived by 2 younger siblings, sister June Mutchler-Leiby, and brother Wayne Parker Mutchler, both of Bloomsburg, PA. She was pre- deceased by 4 other siblings, 3 brothers and 1 sister, as well as a step-brother and a step-sister. Lois is also pre- deceased by one very special and well-loved son-in-law (Deena's husband), Dr. Lionel Warren West.. our loss, heaven's gain.
Lois was born in 1931, to her father, Harry Parker Mutchler, and mother, Gertrude Emma Stack-Mutchler, in the town of Selinsgrove, PA, where she spent her childhood alongside her still-of-living-at-home-age siblings.
She attended Susquehanna High School in Selinsgrove, then went on to graduate with her Registered Nursing Degree at Medical Hospital College in Philadelphia. After college, she moved to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area (to be close to the beach), where she worked for several years at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, in both the Operating Room and the Delivery Room. Lois then worked at Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD), where she served for more than 25 years, as a Staff Nurse, and then as the Head Nurse of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She eventually retired from CHKD in 1999. She enjoyed her retirement with her companion of many years, Walter "Wally" Port, traveling, enjoying Florida winters, playing tennis, golfing, and biking together. Sadly, Wally passed in 2017, and is sorely missed by our family and all who knew him. Later that year, Lois moved from Virginia Beach to Fredericksburg, Va. (where her daughter Deena could keep an eye on her), taking up residence at the senior living facility Harmony at Falls Run, independent living, where, over the next 6 years, she made many new friends. The family recognizes and certainly appreciates the friendships which our mother cherished and was so fortunate to have while she was there at Harmony. Lois considered all of her friends there to be her second family.
Upon earning her wings, Lois will certainly enjoy reuniting with the many loved ones who have gone before her. In addition to the above-mentioned family there waiting for her, she also has (from the Lowrance side of the family) a father-in-law, a mother-in-law, 3 sisters-in-law, 4 brothers-in-law, 2 nephews, 1 niece, and countless aunt and uncle-in-laws. Though we will all miss her dearly, we can take solace in knowing that she will be in very good hands, and she shall surely enjoy some very good company in her new home. There is one remaining sister-in-law, Detra (Pete) Lowrance-Daniels of Virginia Beach.
There will be a celebration of life, for family and friends to celebrate this extraordinary lady, Lois Lowrance, on Sunday, February 25th, from 2:00 to 4:00 at Harmony at Falls Run in Fredericksburg. This gathering will be held in the 4th floor common area (just outside the elevators) /room 404. The family is so grateful for all of the love and the many prayers sent our way over this trying time.
