She was the third of nine children born to Elizabeth Hurkamp and George Benjamin
Skinner on October 20, 1922.
On March 23, 1940, Easter weekend, she married Earl Thomas Purks, and they shared
a fulfilling marriage of 65 years until his death in 2005. In addition to her husband, Lois
was preceded in death by two infant daughters, son James M. Purks, brother Aubrey
Skinner, and sisters Hazel Weedon and Ann Denson.
She lived an independent and productive life prior to her illness. Her love of the
outdoors showed in the care she gave to tending her flowers and maintaining her yard.
Lois enjoyed eating out, talking to friends on the phone, bidding at auctions, and
browsing thrift shops. Her greatest joy in life was being with her family.
Her survivors include daughter Diana Branscome and her husband Leon, and Judy
Baker and her husband Wayne; daughter-in-law Joyce E. Purks; grandchildren Krista
Lynch, Scott Purks, and Heather Branscome; great grandchildren, Molly, Natalie, Ava, and
Ben; brothers John, Wayne, Kenneth, and James Skinner; sister Nellie Pugh; and many
other loving and devoted family members.
The family wishes to express gratitude to at home caregiver Dora Edenton for the
compassion, humor, and love she gave to our mother. Also, a special thank you to Sue
Jones for all the times she was there for mom and to Dr. Wayland Marks of Mary
Washington Hospice. We wish you each God’s blessings.
A service will be held at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service Fredericksburg on Saturday
February 18, 2017 at 3:30 pm, with a visitation taking place one hour prior to service.
Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department
Or Mary Washington Hospice.
