Lucille “Penny” Wyatt Russell, 72, of Fredericksburg, Virginia passed away at her home on Monday, July 26, 2021, from complications of a long term illness. She was surrounded by her loving family during her last days.
Penny was born in Richmond, Virginia on November 15, 1948, to the late John Mitchell Wyatt, III and Nancy Jean Pendleton Wyatt.
Penny is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Wayne Hamilton Russell: son, Thomas Shackelford Call, Jr.,wife, Lindsay, and their children, Wyatt and Eleanor; daughter, Cary Pendleton Call Scharf, husband, Bryan, and their children, Nathan, Adam and Emilie; daughter, Nancy Ashlin Call Myers and husband, Jacob; brother, John Mitchell Wyatt, IV, wife, Lindy, and their child, Virginia Adeline; Kevin W. Russell and wife, Jessica; and Zachary T. Russell. Penny was the matriarch of the family and will be forever and dearly missed.
Penny attended the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia. She enjoyed high school, had many fun times there, was a loyal friend, loved her trips to Virginia Beach each summer, and gave her talents to community organizations. One summer, she volunteered working with children at the William Byrd Community Center in Richmond and also was a candy striper at St. Mary’s Hospital.
She attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Art History. When she arrived in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Penny joined the Junior Board of HFFI, which sponsored the Christmas Candlelight Tour and used her exceptional creative talent to decorate homes annually for Christmas.
Penny’s interest was always children, which probably began when she was a volunteer at age fourteen. She taught elementary school for 25 years primarily with Caroline County Schools and Fredericksburg City Schools. She loved her students and after retirement continued to teach her grandchildren and care for them. Penny fiercely and unconditionally loved her family, children, grandchildren and her 14 year old Bichon, Marley.
A memorial service will be held at Fredericksburg Baptist Church on August 5th at 1:30PM, with the family receiving friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Medi Hospice and/or the Fredericksburg SPCA.
