Maria DeJesus Arteaga Mejia, 79, of Bakersfield, California passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. She was surrounded by loved ones when she took her last breath.

She was born in Nayarit, Mexico on May 16, 1938. When she was only 24 years old she moved to California where she raised her children and spent the majority of her life planting her roots.

Cooking was one of the ways she expressed her love for both cooking and her family. Everyone loved her food, she was an excellent cook! Getting a home cooked meal from her was something we all looked forward to. Maria also enjoyed gardening, she could make just about anything grow. Dancing, when she still could, going to church on Sundays and reading her Bible were all things she enjoyed as well. Most importantly, she did love to just be around her family and it is safe to say, it is a big one!

She is survived by children Juan (Manny), Esperanza (Hope), Angel, Oscar, Maria (Chiquis), and Jaime. She has a total of 26 Grandchildren, 42 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. A reception will be held at the home of Ruth Price at 4109 Glouster Ln in Fredericksburg, Va. afterward.

Please feel free to leave a message for her family, share a memory or story or just give a message of love to her on this page. Your message will be put into a keepsake book. Online condolences may be sent through

We didn’t grow up around our grandmother but having her move to VA to and in our lives for the last 3 years has been a blessing!
She loved to spend time with us whether it was at a family function, a meal out, or at her doctors appointments. You could just feel that she wanted you around and she loved to be around her family. Some of my favorite memories involve hearing her laugh, she had the most adorable laugh that it made you laugh even harder. She would cup her little hands and cover her mouth and just laugh. She enjoyed laughing with us and at our silly humor. Our grandma spoke Spanish as her first language and she would not cut us any breaks by speaking English to us...unless you are were an in-law! Then you got to see she spoke English pretty well. I actually liked that about her. Most of know her little qwerks, my favorite is her love of tissues! She always had her stash in either her shirt, her pockets, or in her bed with her. There were times when they would just fall out of her clothes.
I do wish we could’ve had more time with her, but that was not God’s plan.
She didn’t want us to be sad at her side, or to bring our grief to her in the hospital. She wanted to live her final months, weeks, days being happy. I feel that as a family we’ve all done our best to honor her request. I’ve had this poem for some years now and it kind of reminds me of what she would want us to know:

Do Not Weep by Mary Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle Autumn rain.
When you wake on the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

I Love you Grandma.

My grandmother, or Abuelita Preciosa, nicknamed me Paloma Blanca, because she said I was her white dove. What she didn’t know is that she had it reversed. She is MY white dove. I never really had a grandparent in my life until she moved to Virginia 3.5 years ago. In that time, she showed my what it was to be a loving, strong, woman of faith. The time spent with her I will always cherish and remember fondly. Te amo mucho Abuelita Preciosa.
