Matthew Edward Davis, 29, of Spotsylvania passed away from brain cancer at Johnston-Willis Hospital on Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Matt was an avid sailor on his boat, Runaway and his Hobie Cat. He was also a talented musician; he attended DeMatha Catholic High School, where Matt performed as first chair French horn player in their nationally acclaimed Wind Ensemble as well as first chair viola in their top string ensemble. Matt was also a member of the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he had the privilege of traveling to St. Petersburg, Russia to perform in a concert with the St. Petersburg Orchestra. As a former member of the Catholic University Symphony Orchestra, he had the honor of playing for Pope Francis during the last papal visit to the U.S. He was a proud veteran of the 380th Army Band for which he was a French horn player. He also played French horn for the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra.
His love for music also inspired him to become a certified band instrument repair technician through a program at Minnesota State College Southeast in Red Wing, MN.
Matt was an avid model railroad enthusiast and was the youngest member of the DC Trackers model train club, which put on displays for children around the area during the Christmas season.
As a youth, Matt competed in a number of sports. He swam competitively on his neighborhood swim team. He competed on the Prospect Bay Country Club youth golf team. Matt played lacrosse, initially for the Kent Island Comets and later with the Centreville Lions youth lacrosse where Matt was named to a post-season all-star team as a long pole defenseman. He also enjoyed golfing recreationally and earned one of his most prized trophies by winning a father-son tournament after sinking a 20 foot winning putt on the final hole, as a six year-old..
Matt was an active member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church where he grew up and he continued to work to deepen his faith into adulthood. Matt became a regular attendee of events for Catholic young adults like the Theology on Tap, where he met a number of like-minded Catholic men, with whom Matt started a Catholic young men’s prayer group. Many of these young men had become Matt’s dearest friends and support group during his fight with cancer.
After Matt met his wife Sarah, via a Catholic dating website, they both realized that they shared many of this circle of Catholic friends. It seems inevitable that these two would have come together. They were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis on April 10, 2021.
Most recently, Matt worked as a Real Estate photographer, and had started his own business as a home inspector.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sarah; parents, Edward and Andrea Davis; brother, Nicholas Davis; maternal Grandmother, Connie Vattilana; father and mother in law, Earnest and Sarah Gorham; Matt’s brother in law, Sam Gorham and his wife, Rachel.
