Max was born on April 12, 1928 in Thornburg, Va to Jesse and Bessie Garland.
Max loved to travel, especially to visit family, like to collect coins, and loved to eat blue crabs. He loved sports and was a New York Yankees and Washington Nationals fan.
He attended King George High School and is in their hall of fame for playing baseball. He was the first person in King George to get an offer to play a professional sport. After an injury, he became an umpire and referee for over 30 years for baseball, softball, and basketball. Max is also in the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.
Max was known for organizing the local Veteran’s and First Responders Breakfast. He was a Deacon at First Bible Baptist Church.
Max was also in the Air Force and Air Force reserve 1949 until 1987. During this time, he served in the Korean War where he created and managed the post office in Korea and played on the travelling baseball team.
Max was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Garland; parents, Jesse John Garland and Bessie Oma Garland; brothers, Arnold Garland, Ross Garland, Glen Garland, Carson Garland, Jesse Garland; sisters, Hazel Peterson, Grace Nave, Katherine Garland, and Eva Garland.
He is survived by his son, Roger Garland (Jean); brother, Robert Garland; one grandson, Paul (Christina) and two great-grandchildren, Ezra and Evelyn; many beloved nieces and nephews, and a great friend, Colonel Quinton Smith (USAF Ret.)
A service will be held for Max on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 6:00 PM with a viewing starting at 5:00 PM at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, 1621 Emancipation Hwy., Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401.
