Born January 20 1946 in Southampton, NY, Peter was the cherished son of the late Floyd Kingsley Diefendorf Jr. and Betty Marie Nugent Cook. He grew up in East Hampton, New York, and spent his early high school years at East Hampton High School before graduating from Asheville School for Boys in 1964. Peter went on to fulfill a lifelong dream, earning his Bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1968—the same year he married the love of his life, Ruth Christine Casey, on June 15.
Peter proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1973, spending his active duty years aboard destroyers in the Mediterranean Sea. He was admired by officers and enlisted alike. After completing his military service, he returned home to East Hampton, where he worked as an insurance broker in the Edward F. Cook Agency, his stepfather’s business. He retired after many years of dedicated service to the community.
In later years, Peter and Ruth moved to North Carolina, eventually settling in Bumpass, Virginia in 2022 to be closer to their family. Wherever he lived, Peter brought with him a warm sense of humor, unwavering kindness, and a deep devotion to those he loved.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth Christine Casey Diefendorf; his brother Floyd Kingsley Diefendorf III (Ann) of Shelter Island, NY; daughters Jennifer Dominck (Randy) and Meredith Hinz (Jason); five grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was a loving father, a devoted husband, and a doting grandfather whose greatest joy came from being surrounded by his family.
A faithful Christian and a friend to all, Peter was known for his empathy, humor, and his deep love of animals. He was an avid boater, a bourbon aficionado, and a loyal Navy football fan—always cheering for his team with heart and pride.
Peter’s life was marked by service, integrity, laughter, and love. His presence was a steady light in the lives of many, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 7th, 2025 at Rouzie’s Chapel in Beaverdam, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Peter’s memory to USNA Columbarium Fund, VCU Massey Center Cancer Research, and Rouzie’s Chapel.
