Obituary of Roy Johnson Betsill
Born May 13, 1939 in College Park, Georgia he was the youngest child of seven. In high school, he was an outstanding athlete, lettering in baseball and football, which earned him a full football scholarship to the University of Georgia, 1957-61. In August of 1958, he married his lifelong love, Betty Louise Hulme, which he tragically lost last February. At UGA, he was a member of the 1959 Southeastern Conference Champions and the 1960 Orange Bowl Champions. He graduated in 1961 with a BBA, majoring in Accounting. After graduation, he began working with the federal General Services Administration, first in Atlanta, then transferring to Washington. After five years with GSA, he was selected in 1966 as one of the first administrative personnel in the newly reorganized US Secret Service. In 1972, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was formed, and again he was involved in the formation of the administrative operations of the agency. He spent the remainder of his +34 years of federal service with ATF. After retiring in 1995, he and Betty moved from Springfield, VA to the North Myrtle Beach area, to the Long Bay Club in Longs, SC. They enjoyed a life full of golfing, beach life, and watching their 4 grandchildren grow. In April of 2012, Roy was selected as one of the University of Georgia’s Chapter of the National Football Foundation & Hall of Fame “Post Graduate Achievement Awards.” He is survived by a proud family; son Brett and wife Kristen of Fredericksburg, Virginia; son Robert, and his wife Marilyn of Aldie, Virginia; granddaughter Kimberly, and grandsons Brian, Eric and Matthew.
