She graduated from Marillac College, located in St Louis, where she received a bachelor's degree in education.
On August 22, 1970, Mary married her husband and best friend of 50 years, Edward Crosby. They met at a dance. Mary tells the story warmly of how she was riding in a car, pulling into the parking lot. As she glanced towards the door, she saw Edward on the steps heading into the building. Instantly she knew that she wanted to meet him. They had two children; Paul Crosby and Sarah Cruz, daughter-in-law; Tiffany Crosby, son-in-law; Israel Cruz, and grandchildren; Sarah and Liam Crosby.
Do not be deceived by her stature, as she was one of the strongest people you would ever meet. An optimist to her core, Mary fortified her determination through continuous prayer, positive loving thoughts and affirmations. She was sweet and caring and always wanted you to know that you were loved and accepted. Mary was generous, always focusing outward on you and what you had to say and never wanting to impose even when it was warranted. She was a good friend, with a great sense of humor and was fun. I will forever miss her laugh.
No celebration of Mary would be complete without mentioning Children's House. In 1979 Mary began working at Children's House Montessori School and in 2010, she purchased the school. It was her life's work. Mary's positive, calm, loving, generous and accepting ways were tailor-made for teaching. Her love and caring translated into an environment where the children felt safe and welcome. On Mary's behalf, I want to thank the parents for sending their children to Children's House. She remembered and cherished each child. They enriched Mary's life, providing purpose and meaning.
On Sunday before she passed, Mary asked me with a statement, "We will get through this?" I replied encouragingly, "Yes, mom, we will get through this." Mary is proof that with a lot of love and prayer, kindness and determination, humor and optimism, we can persevere through anything.
Mary is preceded by her parents John and Lucy Connors, brother John Connors, cousin Pat Connors, and granddaughter Sarah Crosby.
