Maggie was born on March 1, 1949, in Richmond, Virginia, to Stanley Dyer and Virginia Bookman Dyer. As a military child and spouse, she lived in many cities and states throughout her life and worked in a variety of professions. After settling in Fulton, Missouri, she worked as an observer at the Missouri State Hospital. Following her battle with cancer, she later returned to work there as a seamstress.
Maggie shared her life with her husband, John W. Hawkins. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, but those titles only begin to describe the role she played in the lives of those who loved her. Her grandchildren were among her greatest joys, and she poured herself into their lives with unconditional love, encouragement, and support. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcomed, cared for, and part of her family, and she truly never knew a stranger.
Maggie was deeply involved in Old Auxvasse Nine-Mile Presbyterian Church, where she generously gave her time and talents. She also participated in the Precious Moments Club and the Quilt Guild. Giving back was an important part of her life, whether through church food drives such as the “Souper Bowl,” supporting charitable organizations, or quietly helping someone in need.
She loved to sew and quilt, but she was perhaps best known for her baking. Maggie always made sure there was dessert, and for many years she created beautiful wedding cakes, including cakes for many of her loved ones. Her talents were shared freely and lovingly, just as everything else in her life was.
Maggie loved people and helping others. She gave more than she ever expected to receive, both physically and emotionally. She was rarely without a smile, always ready to laugh, and could carry on a conversation like no one else. Her warmth, generosity, humor, and unforgettable personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her husband, John W. Hawkins; her son, Paul Simpson and his wife, Dee; her daughter, Melanie Hopkins; her sons, Johnny Hawkins and his wife, Julie, and Jason Hawkins, whom she loved and considered her own; her grandchildren, Dakota Simpson and his wife, Taylor, Haley Hawkins, Mylee Hawkins, Karrleigh Clenin, Paul Simpson Jr., Avery Hopkins, and Gus Hopkins; her brothers, Stanley Dyer and his wife, Carol, and John Dyer and his wife, Nina; as well as great-grandchildren, great-grand fur children, extended family members, church family, and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Virginia Bookman-Dyer, and her sister, Virginia Louise Dyer-Bridges & Husband Robert Bridges.
Visitation will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Debo Funeral Home (833 Court St. Fulton, Missouri 65251). The funeral service will begin at 11 AM, followed by burial at Callaway Memorial Gardens. Following the services and burial, family and friends are invited to gather for a meal and fellowship at Old Auxvasse Nine-Mile Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Old Auxvasse Nine-Mile Presbyterian Church (10672 County Road 184, Williamsburg, MO 63388).
Maggie’s life was defined by love, generosity, laughter, and service to others. She played an irreplaceable role in the lives of her family and friends, and the love she gave will continue to live on through all those she touched.
