Bob was born on December 10, 1933, near Auxvasse, to John E. and Jo Eunice Overfelt. He graduated from Auxvasse HS in 1951 and worked various jobs, including following his brother Ralph to Idaho to cut timber before enlisting in the US Coast Guard in 1954. He served for 20 years and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer with a rating of Engineman (EN) specializing in the repair of diesel engines. He spent his career in various places in the U.S., most notably along the east coast, Midwest and Alaska. He also served on Baffin Island north of the Arctic Circle in Canada and was part of a crew that sailed a ship from the U.S. to Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
After retiring from the Coast Guard in 1974, Bob returned to Auxvasse, working in construction at the nuclear plant in Callaway County while also raising cattle and hogs. He also built his own home during this period with the help of his son, Craig, who was in high school at the time.
Throughout his life he enjoyed going to auctions and buying antiques. He specialized in antique coal stoves as well as all types of clocks, which he would restore and usually display in his home. Another passion was to restore his ancestral home in Auxvasse, a two-story Victorian built in 1903, which he and Willene renovated bringing it back to its original form. This provided an outlet to display and enjoy the antiques collected over the years and gave him much satisfaction.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Willene, of Humansville, MO, his daughter, Debra Overfelt, Auxvasse, MO, and two sons, Robert C. (Craig) Overfelt, Jr. and his wife, Inger Skaarup, of Kansas City, MO, and Everett Overfelt and his wife, Dixie, of Virginia, and his step-daughter, Sandra Dempsey, of St. Robert, MO. Other survivors include his sister-in-law, Todd Overfelt, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives. A special Thank You should be given to Debbie who helped him with his medical needs and provided any caregiver support that was required for the past several years.
Services will be at Debo Funeral Home, Fulton, MO, on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Visitation will be at 11:00 am and a memorial service will follow at noon. A graveside service with military honors will be held following the funeral home service at the Auxvasse Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Auxvasse Cemetery, Auxvasse, MO.
