

Funeral Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Collier-Butler Chapel for Mrs. Amanda Hammonds Gowens, 86, Gadsden who passed away Sunday, February 26, 2012. Rev. Joe Bain and Rev. Wayne Brewer will officiate. Burial will be at Rocky Mount Cemetery, near Sylacauga, AL. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services Directing.
Mrs. Gowens was a native of Talladega, AL and a graduate of Winterboro High School. She moved to Gadsden with her husband of 55 years and was a member of the Cathedral of Praise. She retired from Gadsden Housing Authority after 16 years of service. Mrs. Gowens was preceded in death by her parents, William Miles and Victoria Hammonds, husband, Raymond Gowens, son Sidney Gowens, sisters Essie Mae Patterson, Gertrude Hammonds, Evie Ray Morgan and Zorado Barnes, brothers, Robert H. Hammonds, Bill Hammonds and Mayo Hammonds.
She is survived by her son, Phillip Gowens and wife Sonya
Granddaughters, Sydnee and Olivia Gowens
Sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Norma Gowens
Special Nieces, Victoria Reagan and Frances Cheney and Special Nephew, Billy Barnes
And a host of other nieces and nephews.
The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to Rocky Mount Baptist Church or The Cathedral of Praise.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Gowens will lie in state at Rocky Mount Baptist Church on Thursday from 3 -4 p.m.
