Betty Lou Driskell Mitchell, 94, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, and was reunited with her husband of 54 years, Lacy. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Darlene; her parents, Henry and Pauline Driskell; her sisters, Shirley and Paula; and her brother, Bill.
Born in Gadsden, Alabama, during the Great Depression, she learned early how to make a little go a long way. She later retired from Wellstar Cobb Hospital, where she loved her work and her coworkers who became good friends. She had a gift for making something out of nothing, especially in her kitchen. Between her flower and vegetable gardens and whatever project she was working on, staying busy was her way of life. Her pantry and freezer were always full of vegetables, jams, and jellies she had prepared to make sure her family was well-fed. For her, food wasn't just about a meal, it was one of the ways she showed her love.
She was creative in many ways, sewing everything from everyday clothes for her kids to beautiful dresses for her girls. She was also a wonderful storyteller, often sharing with her children and grandchildren memories of growing up in Alabama. Her stories were colorful, funny, full of detail, and so interesting.
Her faith was the center of everything she did. Whether she was teaching Sunday School, serving as a deacon and elder, or working with the Presbyterian Women, she lived out her devotion through action. But her faith was most apparent in her private life, and every single day she spent time in prayer, naming each of her children, grandchildren, and loved ones one by one.
She leaves behind a family who relied on her strength and a community that will miss her quiet kindness, as well as the quick wit that kept us all on our toes. While she is no longer with us, the love she gave her family will continue through her five children, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. CT, with all family gathering at noon.
A service to honor her life will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. CT, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden, Alabama. A graveside service will follow at New Bethel Cemetery in Hokes Bluff, Alabama. Rev. Pat Driskell will officiate. Special music by Chris Cothran.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Thomas, Ben Meadows, Joe Meadows, Cadle Mitchell, James Mitchell, Thad Allen, Cesar Pingarron, and Ryan Lombardo.
