

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Collier-Butler Chapel for Billy H. Phipps Sr., 77, Gadsden, who passed away Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012. The Rev. Tommy Marshall will officiate with burial at Crestwood Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directing.
Mr. Phipps was a graduate of Pocahontas High School in Pocahontas, Va. He retired from U.S. Steel, Gary, Ind., as a 1st Class Electrician with 30 years of service. Mr. Phipps was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was called back for the Cuban Crisis. He was an active member of The Tabernacle of Gadsden and loved Gospel singing.
Mr. Phipps was preceded in death by his parents, William and Armeta Phipps; and his brother, Noah Phipps.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Freida Phipps; his sons, William Phipps, Bill Phipps Jr. and Rick (Tracie) Phipps; grandchildren, Bradlee Phipps, Amber Phipps; stepgrandson, Matthew Robertson; chosen grandson, P. Phelan; brothers, Earl Phipps, Hughey Phipps, Basil Phipps, David Phipps, Sherman C. Phipps, Gary Phipps, Harry Phipps and Dale Phipps; sisters, Becky Krueger, Dixie Brady and Sarah Jane Jennings; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers for Mr. Phipps will be his family.
Visitation will be Saturday from noon until the hour of service at the funeral home.
