Charlie Otis Dunn

October 12, 1923July 20, 2013

Celebration of life for Charlie Dunn, 89, Southside, who died Saturday, July 20, 2013, will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Thornton and Bill Drummons will officiate. Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 and from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Wednesday prior to the service. Mr. Dunn served his country in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a Propeller Specialist. His tour of duty took him around the world. He left from New York on the East Coast and came home to the California West Coast. Charlie served the Southside community in various ways. He was partly responsible for building Southside’s first fire truck; served as a city councilman several years; and helped build Southside’s first ball park. A member of Southside Baptist Church, he helped in various church building projects, including breaking ground for the latest sanctuary. In addition to serving his community he was an excellent millwright and landscaper. He worked at Goodyear and owned a landscaping business. He also loved old hymns and bluegrass music and played the guitar at many joyful family reunions. Music was and continues to be a very important and glorious part of the Dunn family. On November 23, 2012, Charlie lost the love of his life for 68 years, wife, Pernie Noah Dunn. Also preceding him in death were parents, Joe and Maggie Patterson Dunn and ten siblings. He is survived by daughters, Gloria (Coy) Johnson; Vickie (Michael) Garmon, Southside; Ramona (Tim) Landers, Decatur; sons, Robie (Carolyn) Dunn, Oneonta; Mark (Andrea) Dunn, Symra, TN; granddaughters, Tassy (Greg) Townsel; Jessica (Rick) Russell; grandsons, Tyler and Parker Dunn; 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Charlie Black, Warren Fuhrman, Brian Harbison, James Oglesby, Tommy Sewell, and Mark Yancey. Special thanks to Dianne, Cindy, Molly, Nicki, and Nicole of the Bolton Home, and to Dr. John Wilborn and Pam. Flowers will be accepted or contributions can be made to the Southside Baptist Church Building fund. Online condolences may be made at www.collier-butler.com.

Uncle Charlie always was the most pleasant person I've ever been around. It was always a joy to see his smiling face. I'll miss him so, but know he is having a wonderful time with his wife and siblings. Lots of music and laughter in Heaven today.
