

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 3, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. at Collier-Butler Funeral Home for Mr. Don McElroy, age 91, of Gadsden, who passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011. Minister Tom Holland will officiate with burial at Crestwood Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Service directing.
Mr. McElroy was a faithful member of the North Gadsden Church of Christ. He was born in Dekalb County but resided in Gadsden most of his life. He was retired from GSCC Technical College after 24 years of service and strived for perfection in himself and his students. A number of students won awards on the national level. Mr. McElroy graduated from Athens College and completed double Masters at the University of Alabama. Affiliations include Iota Lambda Sigma Honors Society, American Welding Society, Alabama Education Association, Veterans Foreign Wars, Ala Sight Conservation, East Gadsden Lions Club, Etowah County Chapter of Board of Crippled Children and the Advisory Council of Alabama Christian (Faulkner) University. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stinson and Elsie McElroy; and his lovely wife of 68.5 years, Nell McCulley McElroy.
Pallbearers will be Barry McCulley, Freddie Young, Sorrell Wesson, Wade Johnson, Jim Sheffield, Charles Quattlebaum and Vic Elrod.
Honorary pallbearers will be special friends, Stanley Jackson, Martha Elrod and Betty Johnson, Dr. John Wilborn and all caregivers during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Childhaven Children’s Home, P.O. Box 2070, Cullman, AL 35056 , Alzheimer’s Association or a favorite charity.
Visitation will be held Monday from 11:00 a.m. until service time.
