

Funeral services will be Sunday, September 17th, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., at Collier-Butler Chapel for Dr. Doris Freeman Leftwich, 88, of Gadsden, who passed away Friday, September 15, 2017. The Rev. Lem Lockmiller and Rev. Laney Boman will officiate. Interment will be at Forrest Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services.
Doris was a member of Forrest Avenue Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was well known as an educator, principal, and friend to many. Doris received her B.S. Degree in Education from Jacksonville State University, Master’s Degree and Doctorate from the University of Alabama. She attributed her educational success to the support and encouragement from her husband, James Leftwich, and son, Jimmy. She served as principal of several Etowah County schools and loved sharing stories of students and coworkers. She always remembered something significant about each previous student she encountered.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Allie Freeman; husband, James C. Leftwich; son, Jimmy Leftwich; sister, Frances Freeman; brothers, Billy, William “Bud”, and Ted Freeman; nephew, Will Freeman; niece, Peggy Sue Alexander; brothers in law, Ronnie, Jack, and A.W. Leftwich; sisters in law, Bettie Chandler and Patsy Freeman.
She is survived by her nieces, Sharon Beck (Drew and Tori), Brittany Freeman, Sherry (Randy) Schaeffer; nephews, Billy Jr. (J.T. and Hayden), John (Eli and John David), and Charlie (Blanca, Emma, and Zoe), Don Chandler, Adam Chandler (Tabitha), Robert Taylor (Juanita), Rod Ferguson (Beth), Joe Ferguson, brother in law, Jimmy Leftwich (Connie); sisters in law, Willie Turner, and Betty Couthen; chosen grandson, Bobby Dale Welch (Tracie).
We will forever be thankful to Kim Jones, Paula Mayo, and Jamie Love for the wonderful care they provided and to a special niece, Darlene Chandler, who resided with her allowing her to remain in her home even in her declining health. We would also like to thank Camellia Hospice for their wonderful care and support.
The family will receive friends at Collier-Butler Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
