Funeral Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Collier-Butler Chapel for Emmett Cornutt, Jr., 87, who passed away March 7, 2013. Reverend Diane Housler will begin the service with prayer and his eulogy will be given by friends and family. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Emmett was born February 11, 1926 in Gadsden, AL. He was a student at Emma Sansom High School, where he was All-State in band/tuba and All-State Fullback in football. He served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Birmingham , CL-62. After his service, he returned and graduated with the class of 1947. Emmett retired from the Steel Plant after 40 years. He served in many capacities as a Mason and Shriner at the Alabama City Lodge and was Worshipful Master during his service. After retirement he was an avid tennis player. One of the joys of his life came from music. As part of the “Singing Cornutt” family, he began to participate as soon as he could stand in a chair to sing with his dad and older siblings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Ida Cornutt; son Mark Cornutt; and brothers: James, Elbert, Alta, and Donnie Cornutt.
Emmett is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred Cornutt; daughter Sylvia (John) Coleman; sons: Jim (Cheryl) Cornutt, and Frank Cornutt; daughter-in-law, Deb Cornutt; sisters: Tempie Mackey, and Lucille Rickles; brother, Hansel (Kathy) Cornutt ; sisters-in-law; Billie Jo Cornutt, Audrey Cornutt, Connie Cornutt;; grandchildren Sandy (Chet) Janik, Randy Daughdrill, Jeremy Coleman, Shane (Laura) Cornutt, Kathy (David) Hayes, Brandon (Kasey) Cornutt, Melody (Chris) Oakley, Benjamin Cornutt; 11 great-grandchildren; special nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to count.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Visitation will be from 12:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.
The family requests no flowers please. Donations in memory of Emmett may be to Alabama City Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
There will be no graveside service.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hwang, Dr. Bennett-Venner, Dr. Masood, and the nurses and staff of the 8th and 9th floors of GRMC, and GRMC Home Health and Hospice staff.
