Jerry Thomas Parr, 82, of Southside, Alabama, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Sherill Clontz officiating.
Mr. Parr was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Louise and Coleman Parr.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith Parr. Also surviving him is daughter Karen Parr-Moody (Robert) and granddaughter, Stella Lucy Moody. His is also survived by his son, Stephen Philip Parr.
Mr. Parr attended Alabama University, then spent three years in the U.S. Army before returning to graduate from Jacksonville State University with honors. He was stationed in Korea where he was a cryptographer during the Cold War. Before retirement, he managed the metallurgy department at Gulf States Steel. In his youth, Mr. Parr enjoyed water skiing and snow skiing, which he learned while stationed in Massachusetts. He was an avid reader until his death; history, news and science were favorite topics.
Pall bearers will include Thomas Clontz, Sr., Thomas Clontz, Jr., James Clontz, Craig Clontz, David Clontz and Robert Moody.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Mr. Parr will be buried at Forrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to a nonprofit Mr. Parr supported, the Salvation Army, 114 North 11th Street, Gadsden, Alabama 35901.
