
The family will accept friends from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home (he will Lie in State at the church from 2:00-3:00 p.m.) Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2015 at Whitesboro Baptist Church for John Elbert Gaskin, 89, of Rainbow City, who passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015. Rev. Alan Hallmark and Rev. Scottie Haynie will officiate. Burial will be at Whitesboro Baptist Church Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Mr. Gaskin was a decorated veteran of the US Army, serving in World War II and was a Bronze Star recipient. He was an active member of Whitesboro Baptist Church for 71 years. Mr. Gaskin was an avid fisherman and hunter, and a fan of Auburn football and the Atlanta Braves.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joshua and Jessie Mosley Gaskin; great-grandson, Joshua Reid Gaskin: and siblings, Calvin (Mary Jo), Ernest, Joe (Wilene), Olen (Myrtle), Grady (Lola), RE (Flimer), Aliece Mashburn (Aro), and Bertie Gaskin.
Mr. Gaskin is survived by his wife of 68 years: Betty Haynie Gaskin; children, Don Gaskin (Lynn), Steve Gaskin (Pam), Nita Stone (Robin),and Lana Gaskin Bellew; grandchildren, Ashleigh Gaskin, Holli Miller McLeod (Michael), Randi Wright (Mark), Mandi Roberts (Mead), Casey Miller, Matt Gaskin (Ashley), Josh Gaskin (Nicki), Peyton, Barclay and John Reese Bellew; great grandchildren, Grayson Mead Davis, Beckham and Addison Hammontree, Johnny Maddox Gaskin, Bellah and Ali McCurry, Dirk and Max Wright, Cain and Gunnar Gaskin, Bailee Martin, Jackson and Carter Roberts, Porter and Shepard Gaskin, Riggs and Miller McLeod and Charlee Miller; Sister-in-law, Lucille Gaskin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Evelyn Haynie; family friend, Ronny Bellew; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
