Funeral services will be Friday, June 8th, 2018, at 1:00 p.m., at Collier-Butler Chapel for Dr. Kalman V. Oravet, Sr., 87, of Rainbow City, who passed away Monday, June 4th, 2018. Rev. Sherri Reynolds will officiate. Entombment will be at Rainbow Memorial Gardens. Arrangements under the direction of Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services.
Dr. Oravet was born in Queens, New York on January 10th, 1931. He graduated from Long Island University in New York and received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Oravet served in the United States Army at Fort Campbell. He served as the Executive Director of The Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed playing and teaching the organ, he was known as the “The Neighborhood Handyman”, and was selected as the “World’s Greatest Neighbor” in 1994 by The Gadsden Times.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Ann Kaiser Oravet; seven children, Dr. Kalman (Bobbie) Oravet, Jr., Arthur (Cheri) Oravet, Glory (Marvin) Jones, Susan (Michael) Sweatt, Dr. Barbara Oravet, Albert (Cindy) Oravet, Angela (David) Brown; seventeen grandchildren; and twenty great-granchildren.
Dr. Oravet’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be his neighbor and cherished friend, Royce Smith, Dr. H. Patel, Rainbow City Paramedics and Fire Department.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the music ministry at Christ Central United Methodist Church (409 W Grand Ave., Rainbow City, AL 35906)
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
