

Parlor Services will be at 11: 30 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Collier-Butler Funeral Home for Ms. Leah Haygood Ames, 71, Rainbow City, who passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012. Dr. Craig Carlisle will officiate with burial at Rainbow Memorial Gardens. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services Directing.
Leah was born August 19, 1940 in Chattooga County, GA to Hazel Parker and James Robert Haygood. She graduated from Gadsden High School Class of 1957, than attended the University of Alabama. She was a 20 year employee of the Bell Telephone System, taking early retirement in 1986. From 1986 until she retired again in 2006, she worked at a bookstore in Huntsville, AL. This was her favorite job.
Leah was predeceased by her parents and her former husband, William T. Ames, III. She is survived by one sister, Marie Haygood and a number of cousins.
Leah was a member of Twelfth Street Baptist Church in Gadsden, where she enjoyed her Sunday school class and singing in the choir. While living in Huntsville, she attended Lakewood Baptist Church, also singing in the choir.
Besides her family and her church, her great loves were Alabama football, Atlanta Braves baseball and reading.
Pallbearers will be Bob Fussell, Harold Igou, Bud Stewart, Sonny Taylor, Jim Thompson and Tubby Wills.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Twelfth Street Baptist Choir.
In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Twelfth Street Baptist Church for the Building Fund or for the Music Fund.
The family and friends of Leah want to thank the doctors, nurses, aides, and other caregivers who have been such a comfort during the last weeks. Special thanks to Dr. Terry Perry, Dr. Michael Naughton, Dr. Virenjian Narayan and their staffs, and especially to the Alacare Hospice angels who serve their patients so kindly.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
