Lola Carter Gallagher

Lola Carter Gallagher, 89, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2014, in Johnson City, Tennessee, after a long illness. A native of Cullman County, Alabama, Lola was the daughter of the late James Wickliffe and Zora Howell Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Patrick P. Gallagher, in April 2005, and three brothers, Lester, Howell and Barnard “Jim” Carter.

Survivors include her son, Michael T. Gallagher, his wife Linda, and granddaughters Kelly (Greg Kernosek), Lisa (Jason Elrod) and Erin. “Gama” leaves three great grandchildren, Kyle, Kelsea, and Evan Kernosek. Additional survivors include her sister-in-law Catherine Carter, six nieces and nephews and their families: Priscilla Gottlieb (Marty), Sue Oakley, Pat Gallagher (Rhenetta), Larry Carter (Julie), Connie Carter Fisher (Bill) and Thomas Carter; and special friend Claude Honeycutt.

Lola was a graduate of Emma Sansom High School. She attended Saint James Catholic Church. After leaving Gadsden in 1961, Pat and Lola lived in Houston, Texas, for 28 years, where Lola worked in the retail business for Palais Royal. In 1989 Pat and Lola retired and returned to Gadsden.

Lola enjoyed traveling, visiting with and talking about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, working crossword puzzles, watching sports (especially University of Alabama football), playing bridge, and visiting with friends and family.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM at Collier-Butler Funeral Home on Friday, January 31, 2014. There will be a graveside service at Noon on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Crestwood cemetery. A memorial Mass and family gathering is planned for late spring in Gadsden.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Saint James School Fund in care of Saint James Catholic Church or to any charity of your choice.

The family would like to express its thanks to the nurses and CNAs at NHC and Caris in Johnson City, who helped Lola through her final journey.
