Marguerite Elizabeth Kelly (Piazza) age 84, of Glencoe, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Gadsden Regional Hospital. She was a faithful member of St. James Catholic Church and enjoyed leading bible study weekly with “her ladies” and took special pride in continuing the Piazza tradition of managing the St. Joseph’s Feast Day celebration at church.
Marguerite was a graduate of Gadsden High School, took classes and the University of Alabama Extension Center in Gadsden and held several positions over her working life that included working at the Bama Supermarket (both in Birmingham and Gadsden), the Holy Name of Jesus Hospital, the Air Depot in Glencoe, and in Huntsville where she was the secretary to General Medaris (where she met her husband). There was a gap in her working career as she raised her family. Once all five children were in school full time, she found a love for competitive roller skating, worked at Allstate Crop Hail Insurance Division, was secretary to the Bettendorf School Board, and then worked in the school bus transportation hub (bus barn) before retiring to live up the mountain from her parents in Glencoe.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband Col. Donald Paul Kelly, Jr.; father Vincent Joseph Piazza, mother Mary Catherine Piazza of Glencoe, AL and her brother Joseph Vincent Piazza of Bonaire, GA.
Survivors include son Donald Paul Kelly III (Lynn), grandson Evan, granddaughter Erin; son Christopher Vincent (Elisabeth), grandson Alexander; son Robert Michael (Althea), granddaughter Alyssa; daughter Mary Kelly Lanning, granddaughter Katelyn, grandson Michael; son John Matthew (Donyale), spiritually adopted son Father Kevin Paul Elendu, very special friend Edwin Thompson, siblings Ann Koenig, Sandra Boggio, Helene Piazza, Tom Piazza, Paul Piazza, Christine Ford and Michael Piazza, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Her children and grandchildren were one of her greatest joys in life.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday January 20, 2021 at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. January 21 at St. James Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Catholic School, 700 Albert Rains Blvd., Gadsden, AL 35901
