Marion Edwin “Buddy” Smith, age 93, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Heflin, Alabama on November 13, 1931, the middle child of Cleo and Carl Smith. Buddy attended and graduated from Jacksonville State University, where he met his beloved wife of 61 years, Carolyn. Together, they traveled the world, and built a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Buddy was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and mentor to many. He is survived by his children, Julie Smith Kesler and Franklin “Buddy” Bailey Smith; his grandchildren, Zachary Daniel Kesler and wife Lindsay Goldbeck Kesler, Matthew Ryan Kesler, Emily Kesler Kien and husband Jeremy Thomas Kien, Meredith Rose Ritcher and husband Harlan Ritcher, and Collin Hunter Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Goldie Quinn Kesler, Hansen Cade Ritcher, McClain Everett Kesler, Nathaniel Garrett Kien, Jett Wilder Ritcher, and Mollie Tatum Kien.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Bailey Smith and son-in-law, Gary Hal Kesler.
A lifelong educator and coach, Buddy was passionate about guiding and inspiring young people. He served as a dedicated principal and coach, touching countless lives with his mentorship, wisdom, and unwavering support. Whether on the field, in the school setting, or in everyday life, he led with heart, humor, and an unshakable belief in the potential of others.
Buddy proudly served in the United States Air Force, embodying a deep sense of duty and patriotism that stayed with him throughout his life. Buddy loved the game—any game. Golf, baseball, football—if there was a ball involved, he was all in. He was also a devoted gardener, finding peace and joy among his many plants. He loved growing and he loved giving. He shared thousands of muscadines with neighbors and friends. Buddy was always positive, genuine, even-tempered, and witty. He brought joy, energy, and a fierce sense of competition to everything he did. Yet, it was his role as a provider and protector that truly defined him. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel seen, heard, and cared for. His laughter, stories, and spirit will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In 2018, Buddy and Carolyn moved to Cartersville, Georgia, after raising their family in Eastanollee, Georgia. His family would like to thank Doris “Annie” Gilliam, Judith Imoite, Shatima Gilliam, Janaya Barnes, and Jordan Williams who went above and beyond to ensure he was cared for. The compassion and love they shared for him was unmatched.
His legacy is one of kindness, strength, and an endless capacity for love.
