Marjorie McKinnon Hale, 95, a loving mother of four children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben F. Hale; son, David Hale; brother, Jack McKinnon; and her parents. She is survived by her children, Anne (Wilson) Craft, of Salem, South Carolina; Ben (Crissie) Hale of Hilton Head, South Carolina; and Mary (Bill) Schroth of Marietta, Georgia.
Marjorie, daughter of Gladys and John Curtis McKinnon, was born in Auburn on May 23, 1922. She grew up in Auburn and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) with a degree in Laboratory Technology. After graduation in 1943, she moved to Anniston, then to Gadsden, where she worked as a lab technician at Baptist Memorial Hospital. After she and Ben Hale began their family, Marjorie retired and became a full-time homemaker. She lived in Gadsden over 60 years before moving to the Atlanta area to be with family.
Marjorie was very active in Gadsden First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sewing costumes for Christmas plays and Easter pageants, singing in the Senior Choir, and participating in the Women's Missionary Union as well as the ladies' exercise class.
Marjorie volunteered her time in the community by serving in leadership roles in the Gadsden Music Club, Woman's Club, the PTAs, the American Association of University Women, and the Edenwood Garden Club. She volunteered for the Lions Club by checking the vision of elementary school children.
Marjorie always swelled with pride when telling friends that all four of her children graduated from Auburn. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her the greatest joy.
The family will receive friends at Collier-Butler Funeral Home on Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the memorial service following at 11 a.m. in their chapel. Marjorie's grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers: David (Kelley) Schroth, Michael (Mallory) Schroth, and Lee (Jen) Craft, all of the Atlanta area; Justine (Nikola) Milosev, Hilton Head, South Carolina, Trey Hale, Greenville, South Carolina, Lindsey Craft, Jacksonville, Florida, and McKinnon Hale of Gadsden.
In lieu of flowers, gifts of memory may be made to First Baptist Church of Gadsden or to the Alzheimer's Association.
